Motivate your staff
How do you motivate your staff?
There are two key ways and they are opposites. You can motivate with fear. Scare the crap out of them. Threaten them. Remind them how incompetent they are. Point out how easy it is to fire them. Keep them pissing their pants. That will motivate them.
But that is only motivation for the short term. And it will motivate them to leave. So while they might seem to be motivated to please you today – they will be planning to leave tomorrow. And if they can – they will screw you in the process. Yes, fear will motivate them – but not in the way that you really want.
The other way to motivate your staff is to offer them hope.
Show them your vision. Explain how they can contribute to that. Clarify the opportunities for them in the vision. Encourage them to buy into that vision. Praise their progress. Help them grow. Continue to offer them hope and they will be motivated to work with you.
I guess you could call it the carrot or the stick motivation. They both work – for different reasons and with different results.
Scare the crap out of them – or offer them hope. How do you want to motivate your staff?
