Your Motivation is not my Motivation

Your Motivation is not my Motivation

Why is that so surprising? Because we assume that everyone or most think and feel the same way that we do. Therefore we assume that what motivates use also motivates you. When you think about it – it is silly. But when you realize the way we think and feel is it logical. We just assume that most everyone else thinks and feels the same way we do.That can be a huge mistake when it comes to motivating others. If you assume that they think and feel the same as you – you might never appear motivational to them. After you relate to them on the same levels the motivational value of your messages will sky-rocket.

A motivational message must be delivered in the language and perspective of the listeners. A motivational speaker must understand how the audiences perceives the message.

An effective motivational speaker understands that it is not about the speaker – it is about the listener and how he or she perceives the message of the speaker. If the listener feels motivated after listening to the speaker – then the speaker was motivational.

Motivational Speaker Reality

Motivational Speaker Reality

The truth about motivational speakers is that no can motivate anyone else. As individuals we can only motivate ourselves.  What can a motivational speaker do for you?

A motivational speaker might touch the motivational triggers that we have within us. A motivational speaker must touch your emotions. Motivation is about emotions. And some emotions are easier to trigger than others. For example you can easily motivate someone by making them angry. Does that make you a motivational speaker?  Technically – yes – that would make you a motivational speaker every time you yell at your kids, threaten your staff or intimidate your suppliers.

Motivating people with anger is the easiest way to motivate them. Kick some one and they will kick you back or maybe some one else. What do you want your motivational speaker to do for you? You probably don’t want the speaker to make people angry. You probably want your motivational speaker to motivate your people in a positive way.

You might even want your motivational speaker to unsettle your people in some way. After all – people only move when they are uncomfortable. We eat when we are hungry, stressed or bored.

Motivation is about moving people. A good motivational speaker understands the triggers and dangers of motivating others. Check the reality of your motivational speaker.

Motivational Hunger

Motivational Hunger

No question – a big part of motivation is hunger. What do you crave? What do you thirst for? What will you kill for? Imagine how motivated you are when you are hungry.

The lead partner in a consulting firm told his new partner, “You eat what you kill.” The message was clear. If you want to eat – you better kill. It might sound more gruesome that it is – or maybe it sounds exactly like it is. Sell something and you make money. Wait for someone else to sell you and you starve. How’s that for motivation?

Hunger is a powerful motivator. No surprise. In the movie Papillon you might remember how the hero, (played by Steve McQueen), was motivated by hunger to eat beetles and cockroaches.

Motivational message – you eat what you kill. If you are not hungry enough you might not be motivated. Hungry people are motivated. If you want to find people who are easy to motivate – find hungry people. If you want to deliver a motivational message – tell it like it is.

Zig Ziglar

In my experience, there is only one motivation, and that is desire. No reasons or principle contain it or stand against it.

Motivation is a fire from within. If someone else tries to light that fire under you, chances are it will burn very briefly.
Stephen R. Covey
